Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about dust jackets.
Do you prefer books with a dust jacket? What do you do with your dust jacket while reading? Leave it on or take it off? (Question courtesy of Kim from Page after Page)
PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your opinion in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks.
I don’t actually have a great many books with dust jackets* – mostly because harcover books are just a little out of my price range. But when Kim mentioned dust jackets on her blog last week it got me thinking. I do like them in principle; it is, after all, a good idea to protect the book cover. But when it comes to my books they don’t really serve this purpose.
The whole time they’re on my shelf that dust jacket stays on, keeping them nice and cozy. But as soon as I take them down to read, that dust jacket comes straight off and stored somewhere safe till I’m done. After all, I wouldn’t want the jacket to get damaged! Somehow, I think this is defeating the purpose.
But what about you guys, how do dust jackets fare in your library?
*Okay, I just counted, I have 15, which I have to say, is more than I thought I did.

I like dust jackets. I do buy a lot of harcovers because I am too impatient to wait for the paperbacks. Like you, I remove them when I am reading the book. They tend to get in the way. At work we cover them in plastic to make them shiny and durable and tape them to the book. At home, they just stay loose. Happy reading!

I am exactly the same. I am quite paranoid about protecting my dust jackets. Quite strange since I kind of like it when my books get the beat up look.

Interesting question! My answer is up: http://shouldbereading.wordpress.com/2010/03/08/musing-mondays-mar-8/ ... and I've mentioned a cool "solution" to the problem of the nasty dust-jackets, too -- something I've seen on a couple of books, and thought was fantastic! ;)

Oh well, HERE is my post on the wonderfulness of book jackets.
Fire & Ice Musing Monday
If my book comes with a dust jacket I leave it on. Sometimes I use it as a bookmark. Sometimes I get annoyed with them, but most always I leave it on so I don't get stains on the actual cover.

Ugh the eternal question of dust jackets! The only time I liked them was in high school, and you can find out why here.

On a coincidental note, my Dad just reminded me of two tips concerning dust jackets, one obvious, the other quite handy.
Hi Rebecca,

I leave the dust jackets of hardbacks behind. My belated musing is up. :)
Hahaha I'm with you here!
In my limited experience, books with dust jackets are really heavy and huge so I'm more concerned about finding a comfortable reading position. And then, yes, the dust jacket comes straight off. If it doesn't, there' usually an ugly accidental rip or page-bendy freak thing going on.

I usually prefer to take them off forever, but there are a few exceptions. I always prefer to take them off while reading the book.
I'm a day late! But as they say, better late than never, right?
