Literary Lusts: Gilbert Blythe

Literary Lusts is a meme hosted by Elena over at With Extra Pulp, wherein we discuss any literary characters we may have had developed a crush on.

This week Elena went for the broody Mr. Rochester from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. I seemed to head for the opposite end of the spectrum in my choice:
Gilbert Blythe
from L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series.

I really don’t know how anyone who has read the Anne books couldn’t be completely enamoured with Gilbert. He’s smart and kind, funny and generous. Not to mention absolutely enamoured with Anne.
Right from their earliest rivalry I was cheering for Gilbert, waiting for Anne to realise what every reader already knew: that Gilbert was a catch, and that they were perfect together. And you’ve got to give the boy credit, he really did stick it out, despite all her rejections.

Good on you, Elena, now I want to read Anne!
For those of you who haven’t read the series (and you really should), the first book can be found here.
And did anyone else know that there is an Anne and Gilbert musical? I didn’t! See, this meme is educational, too.

I love Gilbert, right from that very first day at school when he yanked her hair and called her 'carrot top' (I think that's how it went...it's been too long) Like Stacybuckeye, a reread is definitely in order.

Great choice and thanks for joining in!

I totally agree - Gilbert was definitely one of my earliest literary crushes. I knew there was a cartoon series related to Anne of Green Gables, but had no idea there was a musical too!

I couldn't agree more! I remember reading the books and wanting to just shake Anne for not realizing how perfect Gilbert was for her. He's definitely on my list.

Aww, I loved Gilbert. He was so adorable and sweet. I still haven't read the books yet but I've watched all the movies and loved them. Someday I'm definitely going to read the books too. :D

I think the fist time I read though the series/watched the movies I loved Gilbert because rereading it now, I feel like I should like him and really I don't. I don't dislike him but I'm rather indifferent...he's just not John Reid (if you haven't read Time Enough For Drums you must).

I love Gilbert! Ever since I first read the books, then fell even more head over heels when I was watching the movies. He's just about the perfect guy...

I was lucky enough to visit PEI last summer and saw Anne and Gilbert: The Musical. I loved it so much that I went back a second time!! It really focuses on the love story between Anne and Gilbert and is a delicious treat for anyone who has read these classics or seen the movies.

Now that I'm done raving, the soundtrack is available (iTunes and YouTube, etc.). The voices are kind of hard to get used to, but the songs are wonderfully written aand capture the story perfectly. Unfortunately, some of the songs aren't on the soundtrack.
